Prologue

An inverted nipple refers to a condition where the nipple does not protrude sufficiently
compared to the areola or breast, or is retracted inward. Not only is it aesthetically unpleasing,
but secretions cannot be properly discharged, leading to poor hygiene, and it can also cause
breastfeeding difficulties due to the inability to nurse properly.

The surgical method for inverted nipples varies depending on the shape and condition.
Leaving symptoms untreated may cause other breast diseases, so it is recommended to decide on a treatment method
after a thorough consultation with a specialist.

Stages of Inverted Nipples

Find out which stage of inverted nipple applies to you.
Check the stage of the inverted nipple and apply the appropriate surgical method.

Inverted Nipple Grade 1 Illustration — The nipple distinctly protrudes above the upper contour of the breast.

Inverted Nipple Grade 1

A stage where the inverted portion can be easily pulled out by hand
and remains protruding even without being held

Inverted Nipple Grade 2 Illustration — The nipple is moderately retracted, almost flat with the areola.

Inverted Nipple Grade 2

A stage where pulling it out by hand is more difficult than in Stage 1,
and maintaining the protrusion is difficult

Inverted Nipple Grade 3 Illustration — The nipple is completely inverted, and the areola surface appears only as a flat oval.

Inverted Nipple Grade 3

A stage where it is severely inverted, cannot be pulled out by hand,
and immediately retracts once pulled out

How?

Inverted Nipple Surgery

How is the surgery performed?

Inverted nipples require correction not only for aesthetic reasons but also for functional reasons.

Correction can be achieved by choosing an appropriate method considering factors such as the degree of inversion and the possibility of breastfeeding.

Generally, methods can be divided into the triangular flap method and the purse-string suture method.

Triangular Flap Method

In the case of inverted nipples, fibrosis is severe and the milk ducts are short, causing retraction.

Without damaging the milk ducts, the ducts and fibrous tissue must be elongated to bring out the nipple, and then the deficient dermal tissue should be supplemented using a dermal flap.

Suture

Purse-string Suture Method

Through a small incision around the nipple, the fibrous tissue pulling the nipple downward is severed, the milk ducts are elongated, and the nipple is brought out and fixed in place. By minimizing damage to the milk ducts, breastfeeding remains possible after surgery, and scars are barely noticeable.
